Year One wiring harness
« on: March 09, 2006 - 01:34:52 PM »
This seems to be asked quite often, so I decided to do some extensive research into the subject.  The wiring harness is a perfect example of you get what you pay for.  Here are just a FEW of differences with the Year One harnesses. Some are visual others are not.

The wire used in Year One harnesses is crosslink polyethylene rated at 125 degree C (257 degree Fahrenheit), other manufactures harnesses are rated at either 85c or 105C (185/221 Fahrenheit) or a mixture of both.  The crosslink polyethylene is non combustible and stays flexible and in theory any device that shorts out will only take out that circuit and not the entire harness.

All hard shell connection systems are molded out of Nylon 6.6 instead of polypropylene, the benefits are higher temp rating, better elasticity and chemical and ozone reflective properties.

All terminal crimps are done to pass industry standard pull tests.  In addition terminals are the original manufactures or duplicated to the originals, they are not some modified terminal made to fit.

All molded connection systems are molded out of a high temp rated flexible material, rather than the less expensive PCV that hardens after a few years.

Solder is leadless thus environmentally friendly.

Complete harnesses only are built.  If there is a huge differential in the price of the harnesses ask questions.

Electronic conversion harnesses are built to performance standards as to wire length and resistance standards.  This means that the ECU’s must be placed on the firewall, where Chrysler designed them to be.  Extended length wire affect resistance thereby affecting the performance of the ECU’s.

Below are some differences in connectors.

Much as I hate to buy from another retailer, as opposed to the source, Yr. One harnesses are the industry standard. Buying on the cheap may come back to burn you...literally!  :working:

A few months ago I bought and put in the Year One dash harness, as well as their engine harness, on my 73 Cuda.  I'm so happy with them that when disposable income rears its head again, I'm going to get both the forward and rear harnesses.

I thought it was going to be painful tracing every wire down to double check (so I bought a wiring diagram, which I'm still glad to own), but the new Year One looked like the old Plymouth harness, only like noted, with better wire and insulation.  Hats off to Year One's Cuda wiring harnesses.

Just to let you know about those forward and rear harnesses... I bought both for my 70 Challenger. My rear probably didn't need replacing since the wiring was all inside the car anyway, but I went for it. I liked the Year One harness there, but the sockets for the two side marker lights were kind of cheap. I had to work with them to get them to make a good ground contact. My front harness was a peach!!!   :woo:  It even had provisions for my front fender turn signal indictators.  :bananasmi  So yeah, I would do it all again for sure.

I've said it before but the Year One harnesses were the best product we purchased from YO.
That's with over 40+ Orders of parts so that's got to say something!!!!

They stock every loom needed except for the power window looms.

10/10 IMO.

Does anyone know anything about the wiring harness in the wiper motor switch area? I don't see a seperate part number for the 3 speed style. I bought a Year One dash harness for my 70 challenger and it looks like it's for a 2-speed. The switches in the dash have completely different connectors so it seems impossible to have the same harness fit both switch styles. When I installed the shaker hood on my 71 cuda, I had to convert to the 3-speed motor. I have yet to figure out how to connect it so that it will work. The wiper harness that they sell is for the 2 speed wiper motor. Any ideas. Rainy season is almost here.

Honestly that is one area no one should scrimp on, buy the best made wiring you can find, any price difference will be worth the peace of mind knowing that your car is as electrically safe as possible. Also if you need all sets, buy them as you can but unless there is no way around it, I'd say wait and install them all at the same time, perhaps not necessary, but what a good feeling it should give you.

Definitely Year One is the way to go for harnesses. I've purchased them for both my Charger RT and my Challenger, and they fit and function perfectly.
