Top, looking at your pics..You will find welding much easier and better if both srufaces are bare metal...The spots you weled in the top photo, that pinkish panel should be bare steel fora bout 1" back from the edge you're welding. It keeps the weld free of cotaminants, and lets the metal cool (deal witht he heat) much easier than if it's painted. I'm not sure what the 2nd pic was, but on #3, the factory spot welds the 1/4 to the outer wheelhouse there. I cant see any signs of brazing, but maybe it's me/ It looks like a nivc factory welded 1/4 you cut off to me...lol.


I'm adding this pic. It'sa patch from en engine bay. You can see the fake "spot" type welds that will be ground down and look very close to factory when finished. Also, on the butt weld, you can see the small overlapping "dot" looking welds I do. It adds very little heat to the seam. The rust pits were all cleaned out and treated before etch priming.

Very good to know as I thought just a quarter inch cleaned back from area was enough. This is the little things I ned to know. Tell me more.  :2thumbs:

 :dunno: You seem to be doing ok. The biggest deal is, you will only get beter with practice. If you have a parts car, practice welding on the body parts that are trashed. It's similar steel...Also, I always use the least heat possible too. A slightly faster wire feed rate will help keep the sheet metal a little cooler in the welding process too. If it's hidden areas like the lips on teh wheelhouses, buy some weld thru primer. Then you just remove the black coating from the new panel, hit it witht eh primer, drill the holes in the 1/4, and weld them on thru the primer. As a final step, I hit the welds with a heavey coat of primer/sealer or etchprime. It runs into the tinny voids and helps seal out water. Practice makes perfect.

I have two quarters and the top piece that I bought from moparnocar. What I'm attempting to do is take the major portion of my quarter (primer)... (the side skin), use moparnocars piece (orange). Lastly, take the perimeter portions of the other quarter panel (blue) and use its pieces on perimeter for my original. That donor quarter panel (blue)has a bad skin, but everything where it connects to the body is in great shape. Like the trunk rain gutter for instance. The pieces of the donor quarter are where I'm at now putting all the edges on where my original skin will connect to. You may recall that the person who put this quarter on before used Oxy acetylene and fried all contact areas.

yeah I can tell I'm getting better. I nail about 70 percent of where I want to weld to now without missing the small spot I was wanting to be done. I get pissed when I miss. I already have the weld thru primer. Will be using that when the time comes to put it all together.  :thumbsup:
