Opinions on 426
« on: March 08, 2006 - 12:43:35 AM »
I have a fresh 440 built for my challenger, but my dad brought up just today about buying a crate hemi and putting it in instead of the 440.  Opinions on doing this?  And along the same lines will it bolt right up to a 4-spd?

If you have the budget the Hemi is the better way to go , also it will help resale value if you are selling it later on , , the 440 is a great engine also  & if you already have it ready to go it can easily make as much power , it just depends what you are after
Both use the same clutch & blehousing but if the Hemi has an 8 bolt crank the flywheel will not swap

I have to agree that a Hemi is the way to go if possible.  I think I'd rather drive a 440 on the street,  but resale favors the 426.

BTW, you think your Dad would want to adopt a 53 year old ?  Just thought I'd ask.  :bananasmi

Although I love my 440's, you'd have to go for the HEMI.
How many guys get the chance to be "given" a HEMI!?!?  :eek7: :sly: :naughty:

Take it with both hands mate and do your Dads house keeping and lawns for the next 25 years.
That should just about be enough to cover the cost of one head.  :roflsmiley:

One thing about them crate motor though is that their are a lot of complaints from buyers about problems from the factory and a lot of folks recommend that the motor should be taken apart and looked at before dropping it in.  i don't know if MP has taken care of these issues yet or not...

Around here I hear that the crate 426 is nowhere near as good as the original 426, but I couldn't give any details.  Obviously the value of an original is a lot more.  Someone said that the crate 426 isn't much good after you have to rebuild it, while an original is, but again, I can't say why.

I would go for the Hemi right away but the crate ones i dont give much for, better to buy a rebuilt 426(thats not borred to hell) but you can buy a crate 426 and right away tear it apart and you will for sure get a great motor...

Get the Hemi. See if you like it. What the heck. You'll still have the 440.

Get the hemi crate motor, or go to a aftermarket vendor for a motor. If you buy a crate motor from ma mopar, disassemble it and check it out completely. Some known weak points are rocker studs (replace with ARP fastners), inproper oil ring gap alignment, poor pre-assembly prep (cleaning) and leaky rear main seals. If you buy the Mopar crate motor, it's a good investment to go over it.

As far as comparing a hemi to a 440....both can make good HP, but nothing like a hemi for underhood "impact".
