original engine for 66 impala
« on: March 13, 2006 - 09:16:03 PM »
A friend of mine is trying to run down what the original specs were for his 66 impala and has had success with all but the engine.  All he has been able to locate is that it was a v8 but nowhere can he find specific info on which one.   He has gotten it down to the fact that 2-4-6-8 on the third number were v8, his is a 4.  Is anyone on here familiar with chevy vins?

I'm not familiar with the VIN's on Chevys, but I owned a 66 Caprice and a 67 Impala SS and worked as a mechanic at Chevy dealerships from 1973 to 1978. To the best of my knowledge the V-8s available in the 66 Impala would have been the 283 and 327 small blocks and the 396 big block. I think the 427 may have been available too.

Here's what I found on the 66 Impala SS:

Impala SS engine options included the 250ci 155hp I-6, 283ci 195hp V-8, 283ci 4 bbl 220hp V-8, 327ci 4 bbl 275hp V-8, 396ci 4 bbl 325 V-8, 427ci 4 bbl 390hp V-8 and the 427ci 4 bbl 425hp V-8.

I imagine they were similar for the Impala as the SS package was cosmetic at that point.

I appreciate all the info but unfortunatly this leaves him in the same boat as before.  If the option papers are still in the car somewhere would it be listed on those maybe?
