gas tank replacement
« on: March 18, 2006 - 09:41:46 AM »
:1zhelp: I just pulled my gas tank off that has been sitting almost 20 years. full of rust although the oustide lookes fine. Is there any point in trying to clean & seal?
What should I look for & avoid in a new tank? I see plenty on the market from $140-250.

Hey Billitt, I haven't heard of Mitchell Motor Parts, but I would just spend the cash for a new one and avoid trouble down the road. Not real warm and fuzzy with knowing there could be flakes of rust or something plugging up my fuel lines. Go with a major supplier, they have too much at stake to sell you junk. Paddock, Year One etc. If you aren't worried about stock, go with a nice fuel cell. That requires a nole in the trunk though. If you are going stock that isn't an option. I'm going with a 16 gal cell since my gas tank was junk.

Maybe someone else can give you some good vendors.

I bought one for me Challenger and one for my Cuda from Quanta. They make new factory correct replacement gas tanks for Mopars. They have a toll free number and a web site. You can reach them at 1 800 235-8788 or GasTanks.com. I bought mine from one of their dealers and paid $50.00 less than buying directly from Quanta.

THANKY, THANKY,THANKY for the good info. It appears all the tanks I've seen must come from the same manufacturer (except for Y1 which must come from god$) as the same part # ER8? is used. I have ordered from Mitchell Motor Parts thru eBay as the price was lowest $139+29SH. I also ordered their sending unit part # 3420844 for $69.95+7.5SH which is different from some brands & claims to be made by the same company that made the originals. I will post later as to my experience with Mitchell Motor Parts & new parts.                             :worshippy  :worshippy  :worshippy

Received the new tank sending unit & grommet (added later) today.  :clapping: Brand name on box was Spectre as mentioned by Chryco Psycho. To my surprise they combined into one package and only charged one "SHIPPING & HANDLING"  of $29.00  :faint: and was shipped via DHL . Came in 3 days :wow: The only disappointment is there was no filter on the sending unit, which by the way is the same unit others offer, but UPON FURTHER REVIEW this item was not pictured with nor any mention of a filter was made. Unless someone has objections I would recommend this business for these items. This is their eBay store link
http://stores.ebay.com/Mitchell-MOtor-PARts  :smokin:
               total cost $257.85

Filters don't come with the sending units, although that would be nice, don't you think???  :stomp: The only place I saw them was Year One. UGH. I guess you can get by without them if you have a new tank, but it's a risk.
