1970 Challenger 426 Hemi Convertible?
« on: March 13, 2006 - 02:00:05 PM »
My first post here.  I saw something in the parkinglot here at work today that stirred memories of days gone by for me.  I hadn't seen a car quite like this one since my high school days almost 30 years ago.

Now I don't know enough about these babies to know if it was absolutely authentic, but the car looked beautiful, immaculate, either fully restored or?

It was a Dodge Challenger, R/T markings, convertible, 426 hemi badges, if all of that was authentic it had to be a 1970 if my limited knowledge of these vehicles is correct.  Burnt orange with black stripes.  Black roll cage, black interior, black top, just one absolutely awe inspiring car and a throw back to a bygone era.

I should have snapped some pics with my cell phone but they would have been crappy.  Parked where it was in our executive parking lot it must have belonged to one of the higher ups in our building.

Only question I have is out of curiosities sake - what is such a car worth in todays market?  I grew up like many of you in the time when lots of spoiled rich kids drove such cars as these to school.  That time is long gone but the memories aren't.

edit

Found out more about her.  She is indeed original.  Only her engine has been rebuilt.  She is owned by the founder/owner of my company.  In over a year I've never seen him drive this car to work.  Usually his "mad" day car is his Ferarri...I like this one much, much more! :)

Thanks,
TexTuna

Great cars, the base models and hard tops are easily obtainable....but the spoiled rich kids are still driving the convertible Hemi's.  :villagers:

I'll try and take some next time he brings it to work - seems to be few and far between though.  He's had it over a year and this is the first time I've seen it.

I found out more about her.  She's not an original hemi challenger.  It is a '70 RT convertible that he put the hemi in when he bought it - $20k for an engine?  Geeez...she has the hemi hood, badges etc. but she was originally a 383.

I work in a 3 story office building - on the 3rd floor in the interior of it....I can hear that puppy roar to life when he fires it up out in the parking lot....sheesh...

I've never been fortunate enough to own a mopar performance vehicle - my '87 4 banger Plymouth "Duster" don't count and was an affront to its name but hey it was my first new car.  I've owned other Dodge vehicles - but never any performance ones.  That upcoming Challenger sure looks sweet though.  If I hadn't bought an '05 Mustang GT last year I'd definitely be interested in it - may still be.  That vehicle with a hemi engine would evoke the same memories but even better performance as my Mustang.

If the car is nice, it will bring between 75k and 100k and possibly as high as 150k at Barrett-Jackson. Nice original hemi challengers will bring 250k or maybe much more. I've been offered 75k for mine and it's not finished yet. A decent restorable 70 chal convert will cost you 15k to 20k, the resto would cost at least 25k minimum and the hemi/tranny driveline will run 20k. So, you will have 60k to 65k in the car minimum. If you sold it for 75k there wouldn't be much profit for all of that hard work.
