340 rocker arm question
« on: March 16, 2006 - 06:41:42 PM »
I am building a 340 to put in my '68 Charger.

The block is being bored .30 over and I am using the original crank (.20 grind), the original rods (reconditioned), a Comp Cam .477 int, .480 Exh duration 0.050 224 and 230. I plan on using an Edelbrock Air Gap Intake with a 670 Holley Street Dominator carb, and TTI headers. The J heads are being re-conditioned with 2.02 and 1.6 valves.

What should I use for rockers and pushrods? I was leaning towards heavy duty stamped rockers but want to know more about roller-type assemblies and what I would gain with them.

Alum roller rockers will eventually fail especially on the street so if you were going to upgrade either ductile Iron non roller tip or investment cast stainless steel rocker are the way to go
HD stamped are plenty strong but lack accuracy in the 1.5 ratio

I have heard of a few people using them , 1 person had a problem with the rocker siezing on the shaft but if the shafts are over torqued it will oval the shaft & can cause that  problem

Do all those aluminum roller rockers use needle bearings on the rocker shaft?  What about the roller tips, are they all the same design? Are CAT and Proform the same?  I see more and more Proform stuff on the market, must be some good or they would not last.  I have not seen any bad feedback anywhere.  :dunno:

Only Harland Sharp use needle brgs in their rockers & to me this is both overkill & stupid , needle brgs drastically reduce the surface area to support the load enhancing wear + the friction is still the oil between the rocker & shaft + if the rocker breaks & alum will do you really want to fish needle brgs out of the engine or just replace a rocker arm ?
the tips are similar design with a single roller on a shaft , the shaft diameter must change between manufacturers
