Hi Chryco!
« on: May 14, 2007 - 11:21:39 PM »

I just picked up today a 78 440 motor. The mechanic I was talking to had it in a 78 Ram truck that he sold to a kid. The kid ran it low on oil and it started to knock. The motor is still a standard bore. He is going to open it up for me tomorrow and see what kind of damage was done. Bets are on a spun bearing. Hoping cylinders didnt take too much abuse. Engine is complete with all pulleys, carb, intake, heads, etc. So................

I plan to install it in a 70 Coronet 500 convertible. I plan to use the car as a weekend cruiser; cruise nights, car shows, etc. I want something I can drive comfortably to locations within 4 hours of me, so I'm looking at 3.55 gears. I will need to get a new transmission, considering a 727 or A833. I would consider others providing they can be picked up pretty cheaply (I'm not rich). I want to be able to drive on pump gas and have a nice lope to it. Don't need a drag car, but it must live up to the muscle car status. Planning on TTI headers, dual exhaust into flowmasters. Car is a convertible R/T clone, so engine will need to look and play the part. Any reccomendations? Pistons, ratio, cam, intake, head work, trans alternatives that may work with the stock consoles? Thanks! Sal A383Cuda

Well I guess it depends what you want, the car can be converted to a 4 spd Pistol Grip which would be awesome in a convertable , I am sure the 727 route is easier though anyhting else is more work & $$ to install, you can use the 833 OD version if you want but I would recommend 3.91 gears with that
for the engine the std package I use is Speed Pro L2355F pistons with Ported Open chamber heads & 1.81 exhaust valves , balanced bottom end using steel crank & stock rods with new rod bolts , Michigan 77 brgs , windage tray , 6 Qt Hemi pan ,Double roller timing chain , Engle K 56 or K58 Cam & a 2200-2400 stall converter if you go auto [www.englecams.com] , Holley Street dom intake part # 300-14  , & last a Holley Holley 870 cfm Avenger Carb or 6 pack , I have built a number of this package for my customers & all have been happy / impressed with the power & driveability
If you are going to get a steel crank for the engine you may want to look at 440 source , you could also consider a 500" stroker for similar $$$

Sounds great. I went by the mechanics today. I asked him to tear it down there for me so we can figure out whats wrong with it. I figure this may save me from making a $400 mistake should it be trashed. I appreciate your help Chryco. Thanks!

I finally got the chance to lok at the motor today. It comes complete with all pulleys, intake, carb and A/C!  :woohoo: That's nice in Az. It turns freely by hand. Mechanic is going to tear it down for me to see what it will need. We originally thought it was a 78 motor. We checked the numbers and date and it is a 67 440, with a standard bore!  :jumping: I paid the $400 asked....I'm an owner.
