How to disassemble a 70 drivers side mirror for restoration?
« on: March 19, 2006 - 04:12:24 AM »
Could someone please give me a run-down on the method for removing the mirror and remote control assembly from the body of the mirror so it can be prepped for chrome/paint (haven't decided).  It would appear that the 3 control cables need to be released but they appear to go through the mirror backing plate??  Must be a trick of the trade here somewhere??

Well Oz, your question is a good one and the timing for me on it was good for me too. I need to take mine apart also to try and repair it.I just pulled them out recently and didn't even know it was damamged. I understand that pot metal can be repaired. I'd hate to just junk this 70 mirror over a minor flaw. I talked with Dr. V earlier about my mirrors. He says he knows quite a bit about them. Hopefully, he'll chime in here and tell us what's up. And while were talking mirrors, has anybody ever welded pot metal before and a good place they would recommend? Should I consider JB Weld?

It's stinko job for sure. I used a Dremel tool to get the three cables out of the other end(the adjuster knob). The problem was putting them back in after re-chrome. I re-crimped them, and they sorta kinda work, but aren't the same. Maybe someone else has a better way of doing it, but it can't be easier.

When I was ready to take my 70 mirrors apart for chroming, I had the same issue with the remote control knob. 3 wires slide into the slots at the backside of the knob. I  took a narrow blade flat screwdriver to pry the slots apart just enough so I could remove the wires from the remote control. After I got the mirrors back, I re-inserted the wires into the slots and crimped them shut. Seem to work fine. Just be careful not to use too much pressure when widening the slots or you might break the metal.

My 70's are at the chromer right now.  I left the cables in and disconnected the base from the head.  The base is sliding on the cables.  My chromer said that he would be fine.  If you can get the tabs spread apart it is best to disassemble it.  But mine started breaking so I left it.  It all depends on how picky the chromer is.  If I am doing a painted set and the remote works perfectly, I just disconnect the base and mask off the cables.  I do bust the glass though to get at the screws in the head so that the inside of the head can be painted.  Any other ?'s, let me know.  Eric
Finally, a 4 speed!

So you just factor in replacing the mirror glass as part of the resto process??

Hey, Dr. V, not to hijack this thread or anything, but on my drivers side mirror I didn't have any screws at all except the one holding the base to the mirror shell, and on the passenger side, the mirror  head itself was pressed on, rather than screwed on. All I had to do to get the actual mirror head out was to pry it up and out from the  shell. I've seen other posts showing the goofy screw locations for some 1970 mirrors. Almost seems like there were 2 different styles of how mirror heads  were attached to the actual shell.

I won't need to worry anymore about how my mirrors go together or how to get them repaired. I worked out a trade with Dr. V for painted 71-74 E body mirrors. He already has mine now and will be sending my new set in a week or two.  :woohoo:
