R/T Blackout shade
« on: March 06, 2006 - 09:53:08 AM »
I know that the front grill and rear tail panel are blacked out for the R/T cars in 1971, but what shade of black? Flat? Gloss? Semi-gloss?  Anyone have a PPG or Dupont paint code?

The Black was actually molded into the plastic.  I had a friend who used SEM Landau black when he restored his and was happy with the results.  Durability is still questionable as I think a urathane paint would have been a better choice.

The 71 grille was Argent if it was a base Challenger & black for a Challenger R/T.
The tail panel was, I believe, body color for base models & Argent for the Ralleys.

Flat black was used (I'm not 100% sure on that though) FY1 or Barry will know for sure.

You could try Ditzler code 9000.  That is the 71 paint code for the semi-gloss black stripes.

Did any of the 71 cars have the tail stripe like the 70 r/t cars I always liked that way that looked.

If I'm reading my Govier book right, it indicates that the bumble bee stripe was a 1970 only option ( I think ). The book lists V9* as a " transverse paint " option for 1970 only, but it also lists a V8* " transverse tape " option for 1969 - 71.
Anybody know for sure what the scoop is on the bumble bee stripes?
