Holy Undercoating!
« on: April 04, 2006 - 07:15:55 PM »
So I finally got the undercoating on the car. I started prep work on Sunday and just finished laying the coating tonight.  I went with Gator Guard II, which is a 2-part epoxy truck bed liner system. I used a Schultz gun to lay the stuff on. It took FIVE kits to do the underside of the car, the inner fender wells, and the inside of the quarters all the way from tail to door. I have one more kit for the inside of the fenders. Goes on pretty easy but it pretty messy. I used a full one-piece painter's suit from HD. That is a requirement for this job! I masked off areas I didn't want covered, including various mounting points on the underside of the car. I stuff threaded areas with tape. I laid a big plastic drop sheet on the garage floor, but I should have covered the ENTIRE garage floor!

So far, so good. Looks good. Built enough thickness to cover up blemeshes, but didn't go as thick as you would for a bedliner. No pics as of yet as my other half (some would say better half) has the camera and is out of town at the moment. I'll post pics as soon as I can.

My father did the bottom of the car with POR15.  How do you like the truck liner?  I was trhinking about trying that with mine (the liner).  Pictures??

OK...here you go....pics!

I prepped the car by having it media blasted first. Then, I laid down 2 coats of Zero-Rust and let that cure for a couple of months. I went over the areas with degreaser and scuffed with red scotchbrite. I masked off the areas and went to town! I sprayed at 50 psi from about 9". That gave me a nice texture. The coating went on fairly thin...about 2 mil or so....thicker in some areas. The Gator Guard is easy to work with, just messy. When you first open up the can of goop, you're thinking, "there's no way this is ever going to go through any spray gun!" When you add in the second part, which is like a reducer, the goop will soften up. It stays pretty thick, but goes through the gun nice.

Holy undercoating is right.  That looks amazing!  Are you going to paint over the undercoating at all in any areas, say the trunk?

I plan to cover the trunk in color. How long will it stick? I don't know.
