This 440 is still pinging sometimes!!!
« on: April 17, 2006 - 12:05:14 PM »
My 440 with aluminium heads and theorically 10.34:1 compression ratio sometimes is pinging at first moment i put down gas pedal, once I continue pushing gas, the noise desappears.
Now idle advance is 10º and maximum at 34º. I will check it with another strob. pistol.
Maybe the problem comes from distributor with vacuum hose connected, is the mopar performance unit, maybe the springs are too soft and the first gas hit causes it?
What do you think? I'm using always 98 octane fuel.
I'm thinking of change it for a MSD distributor, I heard it doesn't need the vacuum hose and you can calibrate the advance easier. The MSD 6AL box is already installed.

Since you say the pinging goes away as you push the gas farther down, it sounds as though it is getting to much vac advance. I would try turning the allen head screw inside the vacuum can on the side of the dist a turn or 2 counterclockwise which will give it less vacuum advance and see what happens.

:iagree:  At this point either decrease the vacum advance or disconnect it alltogether.

I'm not sure guys. My vacuum advance was giving me fits, but that just comes into play at cruising speed, not when starting out. The octane can't be an issue. Maybe the carb. is running lean? What do your spark plugs look like?

If it still pings with the Vacuum advance disconnected, try stiffer springs in the Distributor.

First I will make sure that the timing light pistol is ok trying with other unit.
Then I try to drive without vacuum hose to see the difference.
There is not problems with the mixture(I suppose), the air/fuel ratio gauge is always on rich zone
Anyway if i need to change the distributor springs I do not know what king of springs could be used to to this work better, i can't find replacing springs for this distributor.
