Best experience concerning e-body dash resto
« on: March 26, 2006 - 02:32:45 PM »
Hey all you E-body owners and restorers.. Who's the best person via your or friend's experience for dash pad restoration and what prep work did you have to do? I have a friend with a '71 Challenger R/T who's got his dash out and it has the typical cracks in it.... I'm assuming on these dashes, you need to separate the VIN plate from the pad prior to shipping to resto. company?

Thanks..
Troy

Troy,

I bought mine from a guy on E-Bay. The company is called Ultimate Rides. I believe his E-Bay name is nitrouspower, or nitrouspowered... something like that. All you have to do is send some piece of crap steel frame for a core. Yes, remove your VIN before you do. He will take a plane steel frame. I was happy with mine. I had to do some trimming around the gauges, and A.C. vents, but that was it.

I also bought my dash pad from Ultimate Rides. If you don't have a core to send, you can still buy the dash pad - you just pay a core charge. That's what I did - ended up paying a $ 50.00 core charge. Those dash pads  do fit very well, though.

Mine for my cuda also came from ultimate rides. It fit great with no problems installing the gauges. They were alot cheaper than just dashes and they do good work.

I checked ebay link and core is $175. Is the guy on ebay ultimate rides?

I just purchased one on Ebay from him and he told me the core charge was $200.  My original is not in that bad of shape, just one small crack at the center speaker but I wanted a new one.  Do you think I should pay the core charge and keep my original and would I ever get more than $200 for it if I sold it.

I really hate to strip it just to send in the metal frame. Or does anyone have a frame for sale that I can send him?

You don't have to strip it before you send it. I didn't. I just took off my car's tag & the challenger badge & reused the wrapping my front bumper came back in.

I don't understand why you would go to the trouble of shipping your dash out for restoration.  I just painted the metal frame and bolted on a new Year One dash pad.  It looks great.
