Minimum legal street requirements for interior
« on: April 11, 2006 - 11:48:58 AM »
I'm getting a 70 Cuda 440 race car, and going to convert it back to the street.  In time I'll try to do a good job, but first concern: what are the minimum legal street requirements for an interior?

My guess:
Seat belts
Speedometer
Rearview (if passenger side mirror is omitted)

2nd question:
I'd like to transfer my interior from my 73 to 70 Cuda.  What parts can you think of that won't make the transfer?  Thanks.

PS
I've bought it, but it hasn't been delivered yet, so I can't answer anything other than the pics (which are close to useless for interior questions).  Just trying to get an idea ahead of time.  Thanks.

I think everything from a '73 should work in a '70.   They made some minor changes in the way some things looked, but basically everything should fit.  Your biggest problem might be if he has a roll cage or if he hacked up the interior in any other way.

:iagree:   The seat belts were different in 70 but I think the 73 will still bolt in and function!  The rest should work!

Umm,

About seat belts. If Cuda's are like Challengers(I believe they would be), there is NO way the 73 rear seat belts will work in a 70. I tried!!!  :banghead:  :banghead:  :banghead: That retractor doesn't fit under the seat. The fronts will work if you have the belts all from the same year. For example, don't try 70 retractors, with the 73 female end. Don't ask me how I know.  :banghead:  :banghead:  :banghead:

As for the rest, I have to ask if they have inspections on a car this old in your state? In Maryland, as long as it's registered as a "Historic" vehicle, meaning built before 1977, you are exempt from state inspection. If you want this car for a daily driver, then the rules will be different, I suppose.

You will definately need windshield wipers. Not interior but missing. Do you have all the heater box, motor etc? That will be required, same as turn signals, spedo, dash lights, 4 ways, reverse lights...etc.
Not sure if a rear mounted fuel cell is street legal if the car has one, especially with the battery in the trunk beside it.   :dunno:

Please ignore this thread, though thanks for your input.  I got a call tonight that even though I put money down on the car at www.1081autosales.com , wired instantly through Western Union, he said the car already sold, so no 70 440 in my immediate future.  I think I'll be kicking something in the corner, but avoid this guy if you can.
