I just read your post when I got to work. I'll check it when I get home and edit this post.  I'm almost sure that that the lock plate is solid on there, but not sure right now.

Are you missing this retainer clip / ring?

Cody, his ring is loose under the bearing.  Take off the next layer and take a pic of that shaft again please.

I have two clips, a "c" clip and a snap ring clip. The C clip was on closest to the lock plate. The lock plate is sitting way too close to the ignition switch and has been rubbing. Where the turn signal housing is and between the splines for the steering wheel there are not any grooves for a ring so they were all between that housing and the lock plate.

The lock plate has some wobble in it and with it rubbing seems like there is something wrong with it. There is no pin that I can see for the lock ring as described in the service manual.

My lock plate is SOLID. It doesn't wobble at all on the shaft. My lock plate hits the ignition switch if I have everything apart and the top clip isn't against the bearing.

My lock plate is loose  but it won't come off :'(

Cody, did the snap ring go under the turn signal mechanism?

Thanks for all the help! I may end up having to pull the shaft...

the bearing has a snap ring above it in the bearing housing that should prevent movement , also the bearing housing is held by 3 screws that should be tight , this is where I would look first

Thank you guys once again. I found it. I went back over all the post and I noticed Chryco said " a snap ring above it" . Whoever put this car together had both snap rings below the bearing housing. With the pictures that everybody supplied it kind of showed me that somebody screwed up. so after Cody and Rob's last post I pulled the turn signal switch off, pulled the shaft out and put the snap ring there where it was in Cody's picture. And BAM....it worked, smooth and sweet... Now I can go shoot some hoops  :clapping:     Thank you guys!!!  Art
