Setting Hydraulic's valve lash
« on: April 10, 2006 - 10:20:48 PM »
Hey guys. I'm going home for Easter this coming weekend from college and want to finally work on my car (winter lasts too ling in MN). I got a Crane iron adjustable rocker arm set and am ordering some Chromed Rocker shafts to be at my place by this weekend. I have no clue how to install these babies. How do you set the lash and or pre load with a hydrolic cam? If anyone could give me a quick walkthrough of how to do this it would probably save me a ton of guess work and another new cam. Thanks

you need to bring each cylinder up to TDC firing stroke in rotation & set the valves for each cylinder , basically just remove all the vertical play & tighten the adjuster 1/2 turn to preload the lifter

Cool. I thought is was going to be alot harder than that. I guess I'll just have to rotate it around 8 time then. Once for each cylinder. Thanks for the help.

Should only have to complete 2--360* rotations.  Can do it in 1, but I prefer two.  Start at # 1 cylinder and set both valves.
Rotate exactly 90* and set # 8 valves.
Rotate 90* and set # 4 valves.
Rotate 90* and set # 3 valves
Rotate 90* and set # 6 valves
Rotate 90* and set # 5 valves
Rotate 90* and set # 7 valves
Rotate 90* and set # 2 valves

2 complete rotations of the crank and you are done...........   Hope this helps...   Oldschool

Stupid question here, but I have the non-adjustable right now so there has been no issues, but on a Chevy I worked on once I couldn't cold set it to save my life and had to do it while it was running - man what a mess.

I guess the question is, is "cold" lash setting done right just as good as running the engine and adjusting till the tick is out of that liffter?

If it is done right cold with the lifter on the lowest point of the cam lobe it really cannot change , on a first start the head gasket will compress slightly & add preload but it would be minimal

Install timing tape on the damper or just mark it every 90 degrees with a paint stick or chaulk.
