cuda 440 ci : electronic ignition
« on: April 23, 2006 - 11:28:08 AM »
I have got a cuda 440 ci with a new ( summit ) electronic ignition . My problem is the engine don t start . When I turn the key on the run position I have 12 V at the coil and when I turn to the start position The volts failled to 8.5 V . Is it normal and is it enought to start the engine ?
The Blue ECU and the ignitor Are new !

Hmm, I didn't even know Summit made their own ignition system. On a Mopar system, that amount of voltage would be fine. In fact, I measure about 8 volts on the "+" side of my coil when running. Can we have some history here? Did this engine run before this switch? Are you converting from points to electronic now?

When you go to the start position of the ignition switch the ballast resistor should be bypassed so there is no voltage reduction. 8.5 volts is pretty low for starting, should be somewhere from 9.5-10.5 depending on how good your battery is.

Maybe if you could post some more details of your install we could get a better idea of what has been done sor far.  Have you checked for spark when cranking?

Ok , Two answered and there s differents! 8.5 v ; 9.5 v what is better ? Is it possible
the problem came of my starter ,I taked it on my slant six before I changed the engine for a 440ci ? If I connect 1 or 2 battery with cables, there s no differences . The starter turn but not fastly . Is it possible the starter swallow all the energy and after the volt are :dunno: so poor for the coil ?

Bruno.

My english is bad and if you don t understand ,let me know !Thank s ! :dunno:

I assume you have a good ground from the battery to the engine , normally you should  have 12v while cranking & 9v in the run position so possibly something is connected wrong there too
 Is the battery good ?

My battery is good! There s a thing I want know ;why the +coil is connect on the start positon and not on the run position on the wiring diagram ? Is it normal ?
And my ballast is a 1.25 OHMS .Is it enough or too high ?
My spark are AC delco 45s ;Is it good spark ?

The diagram you posted is correct. Your ballast resistor measures correctly. I don't know about your spark plugs. I have Autolite 85's in my 440. It seems like everything here is correct. Did this engine run before you put this ignition in? Are you getting gas to the carburetor? When you look down the throat of the carb. after pumping the gas pedal, can you see where it has been wet by the gas?

Before this engine is in my car it run 10 minutes .The carb is new (street avenger Holley 670 cfm) and the fuel pump too. The first time is start immediately with this ignition but I can t arrived to have a low idle speed under 1000 rpm and he turn only with the idle mixture unscrew. At this period I didn t received all the parts and the carburator gasket was old and I forget to seal the valley pan .(Yes  I know it s unforgivable)and when I taked off the the intake manifold and the valley pan there s was a lot of fuel under it .near the camshaft .Y kwow I made a mistake but he started and runned 10 minutes !

To make a right job .I changed the carb gasket ,I sealed the manifold and valley pan and before this day he don t want to start again. If I put a lot of fuel in the carb and When I taked of all the sparks .Left sparks are wet and right sparks are dry. Is it possible there s a leak again ? My manifold is new and it s a mopar performance .

I don t understand what is arrive  .

the coil is connected to boh the start & run wires in the diagram , it is direct from the start side to give the coil 12v & runs through the ballast in run to drop the voltage
not sure why it is not starting assuming you have spark & fuel
