has anyone used engine restorer?
« on: April 18, 2006 - 04:39:09 PM »
I was wondering if anyone has used engine restorer. Its added to the engine oil and is suppored to give higher compression and reduce oil burning. My dart is burning oil now. I am going to rebuild the engine next winter and was wondering if this would work for me for the summer to burn less oil and less smoke.

Thanks

I have no experience with the stuff, although I know it has been around for years. I just want to ask about your engine. Do you feel the smoke is from high mileage, or possibly this car has sat for a while? Also, is the smoke black, or white-ish? Assuming black, it would be oil or a rich running carb.. Do you have to add oil often? My old 74 Dart had to have a quart every 500 miles or so, but I never noticed any smoke. It did have over 90K on the engine though.

i dont know what the milage on the engine is. The smoke is blueish, and i do have to add oil often. Probably put 300 miles on it last summer and put 2 quarts in it. It also leaks a bit, but i dont think that it was leaking that much.

I used Restore in a tired '85 T-bird Turbo Coupe years ago and it did seem to help bring back some lost power. I don't remember it helping a whole lot on the oil consumption though.

Have you tried using a thicker oil?

I bought the car last summer and chaned the oil after i had driven it a bit. Not sure what was in it to start with, but i put 5-w30 in it and it smoked more than it did before. I'm not sure what weight they are supposed to be, i put that in cause thats what my truck requires.

Funny thing I was just gonna ask about this in a post mwself...

Do the new additives-RESTORE-Ect-ECT, really do anything? I 'm kind of OLd School on this (Sorry OLDSCHOOL). I always felt hows a liquid gonna replace worn away metal?? :clueless:

But I've heard the some things about these new chemicals, so do I need to change my thoughts or stay the way I am :dunno:

I haven't tried, but maybe you can do a Google-search and see if anyone out there has posted comments about it. It's not like it's new, so maybe someone out there in Internet land knows something?  :dunno:

i would just go to a straight 30w Oil it will be fine for the summer and is thick enough that it won't burn away so fast. But sorry to say if you are using 1 Qt every 300 miles there is no cheap fix.

I agree with the straight 30W oil. I drive a Honda to work with 225,000 miles that used a QT a week. Changed to 30 weight and its now using a qt a month or more.  Try the RESTORE and let us know your findings. I've used it in the past but can't remember what happened.  (DUH)

Sorry, gotta stick my nose in here.

68 A, when is this blueish smoke happening?  Does it happen when you accelerate or if you drive the car (warmed up) around then let it sit for like 20 minutes then start it do you see a puff of blueish smoke on startup?

If it's the second, you might just have worn valve seals, which isn't too big a deal to fix.  On an old 318 I had this was a problem and I lost a lot of oil because of this.

The thicker oil is a great suggestion as the others have said.  Engine restorer, as MEKrunner said, has been around for a while.  Doesn't cost much so it might be worth a try.  Let us know what happens!

I agree with SuperBlue too. If you just change the valve seals you could stop your oil consumption by 75%. Easy to do with a valve spring compressor and a little rope, in the cylinder to hold the valves up, while you change them.
