Door hinge question
« on: May 09, 2006 - 12:25:38 PM »
Unfortunately I am a member of the saggy door club.  I recently bought door hinge repair kits to fix both of my doors.  On the package it says that the kit is suppoed to have two pins and four bushings, enough to do one side.  From the picture below, both of them only came with two bushings.  Are only two needed, or did I get short changed?  Has anyone tacked this job before and do they have any advice before I tear into everythig?

I just got done doing my doors last week.  Originally, only one of the hinges (top I believe) had the bushings.  The kit that I got came with 4 bushings, but I had to drill out the other hinge for them to fit.  It looks like the kit that you have is more like a factory replacement one that does not require drilling out the hinge.  I think that you should be fine with that kit.  If you have any other questions, let me know.  I will try to help you out as much as possible.  It is nice to have at least 3 people total when putting on/taking off the doors.  A ratchet wrench is a must for the hinge bolts on the door.

Check the bushings in the lower hinge....the hinges I have are rather tight, but not perfect. The upper hinge gets drilled and bushed. That is a definate. If you're going through the pain of taking off nice doors, do it once and do it all. You may want to consider doing only 1 hinge at a time and propping the door up on a jack? I haven't done that before so check with others first!

BTW....it's a piece of cake to do the actual rebuilt. I'm in the process now. Use a vice or a press to get the pin moving. Use a drift or punch with hammer to finish the job of getting the pin out. Piece of cake.

Make sure that you drill the holes straight because if you don't, the bushing will crack on one side.. speaking from experience  :-\ But yes, like Steve said, it is pretty easy to do.  It is the mounting and adjusting of the door that is tough.  Good luck

I picked it up at Auto Zone.  If you go to http://www.dormanproducts.com/ you can use the parts search function on the left hand side to find stuff for your car.  The one I got covers several years of Chrysler products, so it my be the one you need also.
