1 of how many
« on: May 10, 2006 - 06:12:40 PM »
I am kind of new here and am wondering how do people tell what is the specific number of cars built with the options they have. I have a 1970 Challenger SE 383/ 4BBl,Color B71X, with the following options,AO1,A62,B41,B51,C216,C95,D34,D91,E63,F11,F25,G15,G33,H31,J46,J55,M05,M85,R35,S77,V1X,W21,AND T86.
I guess I am looking for information on where to look. You can see my other post in Ebod pictures (I work at the dealership that sold it new)
This is a great site glad I found it.
Thanks in advance for the help.
Jeff

There is no way of telling you the exact amount due to options like color, interior, or any other goodies. According to my book there were 814 Challenger SEs made with a 383-4....of that 12 were 3-speeds, 158 were 4-speeds, and 644 were autos. Anything narrower than that is just speculation....

lilboat57,

Does it really matter?  You have something that everyone else is looking for, trust me! You bought a 70 Challenger SE fro mthe orginal owner.  Not many of us can say that.  These cars were made 35 years ago and many never made it into the following year.  I understand where you are coming from, even I have been down that rode of how many of this and how many of that.  It comes down to have and have not.  You have and so do I.

Yours is in a lot better shape than mine.

As to the speculation, many times you will find reputable sources that will give figures such as:

(Not a real figure ->) In 1970 a popular option was the Rim Blo steering wheel which had a beautiful wood finish in contrast to the polished spokes. It was so popular in fact that 37% of the cars that year ordered them.

Obviously if you had the Rim Blo you could take 37% of the total 814 built and ESTIMATE that your car is 1 of 301 cars.

Keep in mind I made up the 37%. NOT a real figure.

That is very true A383, just that the problem with that is its purely guess work, educated but guessing none the less. Say for instance that 50% of cars came with a certain option and there were only 3 cars produced, do you round down to 1 or up to 2? I know that is an extreme example, but Im just trying to show that there are way too many variables to even speculate. Really, for the most part every car is a "1 of 1" car when you break down every option...so lets just all say that. After all, how many other people do you know with the EXACT same car?
