Wheel size fit question
« on: May 16, 2006 - 08:44:14 AM »
A friend of my just got into Mopars after being a GM guy for years like me. He bought a 70 Grand coupe, and would like to go with 17x9 rear wheels with a 5.5 back space. I said I'm not sure if they will fit without relocating the leaf springs. I went with 17x8's with 4.5 back space and they fit. He did not say tire size, but I'm thinking it will be 245/40/17's.
Thanks for the help.

I can't see it working. At 5.5 inches, that rim should be touching the leaf spring.

I agree , 5.5" is too much back spacing

My Gran Coupe has 6" of rear space (the face of my drum to the leaf spring) with the rear end centered.  5” of BS on a 9” should about center a 245 between the leafspring and the inner quarter.  Running a 245, on a 9” rim will add about a half inch of tire to each side of the wheel’s width.  With 5” of BS he should have 0.5” between the tire and the spring (if the rear is centered).  He should measure each side to see what he has.

5.5” is probably too much BS.  The rim won't touch the spring, but the tire probably will.

I run 5.5 BS with a B body hub to hub width and 3/4 relocation kit. Without mods I can't see 5.5 BS fitting an E body. I agree with BP23, the rim will probably have 1/4" to 1/2" clearance from the rear of the leaf spring (depending on how true the rear frame rails were jigged), and no-go for tire sidewall clearance.

f5F is correct. That is the best setup for basicly stock looking E-bodies going for the most room in the wheelwell....
