i'm short about an inch from connecting to my power steering box??? so i'm guessing maybe it was a manual steering car? when i bought the car it was all torn apart so i have no clue as to what was there...

The manual steering column is longer than the power steering column. Unless you have the wrong column, then your column was probably collapsed when the steering box was removed. You should be able to just pull it back out with a little effort. Maybe try putting the pin in the column and tap it back down with a hammer.....
