When I change out my steering box on the Challenger with a rebuilt box from AutoZone, It came with some instructions on how to center the steering valve if that problem happened. I glanced over it but didn't have to adjust it since everything seemed fine after I drove it. I think it had me loosening the top plate( where the hoses connect and sliding it forward or rearward depending on which way it pulled, then tightening the bolts down. Make SURE that the car isn't running when you do this or fluid under pressure will shoot everywhere.  I'll look for it after work to update this post. I also have a service manual to check if someone else doesn't post a diagram first.

Your car sounds possessed. You might need a Priest instead of a mechanic.

I'm sorry, I couldn't resist.  :-[ It definitely sounds like you have a problem with the valve. I wish I could offer some advice.  :clueless:

Sorry Swedish, everytime I think about getting my service manual out of the garage, I end up working on something else and forgetting to look that up. I'll get to it if somebody doesn't answer first.

where the hoses connect to the steering box you will find 2 - 1/2 bolts loosen them & gently tap the housing up or down on the steering box until the hweel stays centered , 1/" of movement is a lot so it will not take much to center it

Back to the original question:It will probably surprise you how well your challenger will handle if you just do the basics ie:properly sized swaybar, good but not great aftermarket shocks-(kyb instead of koni), big sway bars on each end. To give a quick example when in highschool I had a 73 'cuda w/440 It had stock 340 torsion bars-factory sway bars and new KYB shocks. That car handled just a little better than my fiance's 96 honda accord, I know this cause I was thrashin' her car on this one particular backroad two weekends ago. So.... just a good common sense approach will get you a pretty good handling car and as soon as the road straightens out lookout-big block mopar coming through

Problem seems to be solved ,but here's my easy cure in case anyone cares :P

I had the same problem when I dropped my engine back into my car. There is very little play in the connection for the hoses but it's insanely sensitive. The way I fixed it was to make the bolts "snug" ,not "tight".Tapped the hose adapter all the way forward with a small hammer and small taps.Stuck a 2x4 in the wheel to hold it straight and started the car.Would give the adapter couple/few taps back and check the wheel. After what couldn't be more than 0.015" tapping the wheel stopped being possesed.Cranked the bolts down and no problems since.
