HELP.... Carb issue

I went out crusin tonight and as I pulled up to make a left at the first major road, I stalled it out.  I did this a couple of more times before I realized it wasn't my lack of driving skill that was causing it.  Something has changed since last fall.  The only thing I changed was to put the correct unsilenced black air cleaner on.  The carb is an Edelbrock 650.  Here's what's happening.  From an idle, at a stop, when I accelerate quick, I THINK it's dumping a bit too much fuel. if I kind of tap it before I go then most of the time I'm alright.  Now this works all the time, if I keep the rpms up to 1500 then I can do what ever I like and it runs great. Everything over 1500 is just fine. What bugs me the most is that I didn't change anything except the air cleaner from a 72 version to the 71 unsilenced type. Any one got any ideas what my problem is (Chryco)?

gum in the carb from siting? maybe floats sticking

Yeah that's possible. How do you check and how do you get rid of it?

Man your talkin to the wrong guy but you could always add some cleaner to the tank & drive the PISS out of it  :icon16:

Seriously before I got tooo deep into trying to fix anything I'd add some Lucas fuel treatment & put a few highway miles on it. Don't think it's a fuel pump that would show up more at high RPM, one possibility I thought of was could the new air cleaner be interfering with linkage, those do drop down lower than some.   :smokin:

the accelerator pumps are notorious for drying up when they sit & then not squirting fuel  the pump is available separatly without buying a complete kit , replace it & the problem will go away til next spring

 :iagree:  a simple test for that is when the car is cold, been sitting for a day or so, you have to pump the accelerator a bunch to get it to fire

Thanks guys.  That accelerator pump idea sounds like the issues to me.
I told my buddy every time we stopped that I knew WHO would know what was wrong (Chryco).
Thanks again Bullitt and Chryco.
Now I gotta find out where to get one. It sure would be nice to find one today at a store somewhere.

Thanks Bullitt, I went to Edelbrock.com and found 3 dealers within 10 miles of me. Two of them were Autozone. Here's hoping they stock the pump.

I got to thinking about the fact that my carb is a manual choke and realized that I don't have a cable or anything hooked up to it. I went out, took off the air cleaner and pumped the throttle by hand 3 times and each time, plenty of fuel came out.  I then started it up and started putting the choke in different positions and found that if I closed it just a little bit that it seemed to give me the same results as if I was sitting at a light feathering it waiting to take off.

I hate to appear stupid but could that be my problem instead of the accelerator pump or am I just compensating for something else being wrong? I'd say 1/8 inch travel made a big difference.

I know this doesn't seem like a big deal but when your sitting at a light trying to turn left, stalling and difficulty restarting is not my idea of cruising.

When you close the choke you are limiting the amount of air therefore enriching the mixture. adjusting your mixture screws would correct. BUT if you have a gum buildup that will do away with some driving you will need to adjust back after the gum dissipates. :2cents:

Choke thing happened to me on a Holley 750 I had. No cable to keep the thing open and it started closing aand stalling on hard throttles.I tie strapped it open and it solved the problem. Worth a try on your end...

I usually cut a piece of coathanger wire & insert it into the choke mechaism so it cannot come on
 I do this as I install the carb so I have never had that problem
