Electric issues

Having a few electrical issues with my Challenger.  I usually can try and figure things out on the car, but electrical stuff I am pretty ignorant about.  I want to replace the electric fan relay because it is not turning the fan on until around 210, which is way to late here in CA.  I am wondering about thermostat placement, as the current one seems to be right in the radiator core itself.  I do not want to pull that out, and end up with a hole in the radiator.  Should I just replace the current thermostat for the current relay, or just be sure about it and replace the whole relay with a painless performance unit?  Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

you either need a differnt switch to turn it on sooner or move the T stat to the block

Try this one from Summit.  185 degree turn on, 170 degree turn off.  Don't change the relay, just the switch.

Thanks guys for the tips.  Does it make sence that they previous owner would have mounted the thermostat directly into the radiator like it appears, or am I just looking at something the wrong way?

Does it screw into the top tank like the factory vacuum switch did?   I have a radiator out of a late b-body that had this port.  If you can screw onto the water pump it would be better, but the upper tank is good also.

It actually appears that it was screwed into the back of the radiator, and pokes through the front about 6 inches down from the top on the left hand side if you are facing the engine bay.

I don't follow you as the toptank is only 3" tall.  We are talking about a stock Mopar radiator, right?
If you can't swap out the sensor and put the new one in, you'll have to drill out that big plug on top of the water pump and put it in there.  Big block right?

Sorry for the confusion, I have only experienced a manual fan before this electric one.  I will try and take a picture of the set up I believe is the thermostat and post it here later.  But to try and explain further, if you are looking from the top, straight down on the radiator, it would almost look like this --l------ , with the l being the placement of the thermostat, only around 6 inches down from the top.  Do not know if this makes any sence at all.  Again, I will try and post pics later.  Thanks again for all the help.

I have no knowledge of electric fans either, so we are in the same boat. It just seems strange that the thermostat isn't in the block like the manual/original fan would have had it.  :clueless: In any case, maybe you just need a lower rated thermostat?

Best place for the switch is the water pump. Next, is any place in the top hose or top tank, since that is the return hose of the radiator.

Just wanted to let everyone that made some suggestions know that I replaced the whole sending unit and changed the placement of the thermostat and the fan now turns on at the right temp.  Cooling issues seem to be minimized at the time.  Thanks for all the help.   :wavingflag:
