Where to Start
« on: July 09, 2006 - 07:15:50 PM »
I have owned a lot of cars in my time.  However, I have never restored one.   In your opinions where do I start first?  Thanks in advance.

Gets lots of small sandwich bags and Sharpies. Label everything and save every piece. Take lot of pictures.
Map out your plan for what you want your finished resto to be.

As to where to start first what do you want to do? Is it a full restoration? Do you want to drive it while you restore?
Will you do most of the work?

Thanks for your reply.  The car will not be driven while being restored.  I will swap the 340 for a 440 and the slap stick for a 4,5,6 speed manuel.  Should I pull the engine first? before starting on the body?  I am not the most sophisticated gear head in the world but I give a lot of effort.  However, much of this work will be done by others.  If in my shoes where do you start first?  I would like to strip the car myself and have the body work done by a professional if that is practical.  Help with suggestions please!

I would pull the engine and strip all of the trim and bumpers from the exterior for a start.  The interior should come out also if you are planning to go that deep.  The front and rear glass has to come too if there is any sign of rust.  The front glass may be shot anyway.
