71 Cuda Brake Proportioning Valve Rebuild?
« on: June 06, 2006 - 10:02:50 PM »
Hi C-C gang,

I got a call from the resto shop today.  They are reinstalling my brake system and they feel that the proportioning valve may not be working properly as they are only getting fluid to one wheel. As I am a technical dummy, can anyone tell me if these can be rebuilt and possibly by whom. I am trying to keep this resto as authentic as possible and would like to reuse this if possible without having to switch to one of the other non-correct valves that some of the brake line vendors sell. If you have done it please enlighten me.  Attached is a pic of my setup before teardown.  Thanks, Ed

PS, my car is a 383 AT with power brakes, front disc brakes, rear drums

Chryco,

Thanks.  I found this picture of an exploded view of the valve from a 69 RR.  It looks to me that all there really is is a couple of O-rings and maybe the springs that could be replaced. I think I might give it a shot.

While I was reading this one thing can to mind. You are talking about the front brakes, correct?. The rear brakes have only one line going to the rear. If this concerned the rear it would not have anything to do with the proportioning valve. Only asking

the proportioning valve balances pressure between the front & rear brakes

Doesn't it act as a splitter from left to right as well?

I am going to take a guess and say that the metering block next to the proportioning valve splits the left and right on the front brakes. I don't have my car here to verify it so it is just a wild guess

no , it has to have equal pressure to the left & right & it does Tee it so it goes to both but it is wide open to each side
