Adjusting a T/A steering box
« on: June 11, 2006 - 05:15:12 PM »
Is there a way to adjust a T/A steering box?  A buddy of mine has one in his R/T and when he lets go of the wheel the car wants to do a U Turn and there is nothing wrong with the allignment.  Any suggestions?

April

April, I just got the bad news on my steering gear, I can't make a full right turn and the guy at the shop told me they're not adjustable or repairable, they just rebuild them.  I'm looking now cause at PADDOCK they are $300!  And to make matters worse he told me that it would take him all day which means $500 to install.
I found one on ebay and I'm going to do the work myself.. after the driving season is over.
I'd say it doesn't look good for your friend.

Acually, the fix for April's pal is quite easy. Here is an image from the 1970 FSM, not the highlighted text;

Here is what the steering valve housing looks like, it is outlined in red. To adjust it, loosen the two bolts (outlined in yellow) you want them just barely loose, usually a turn or two. Then tap the end of the housing up or down as listed in the last photo, tighten it back up and try it again.

Cake piece.  :bigsmile:

Hi Romi,
He looked at it, so I do not know. If it is the standard ratio power steering unit you can buy a rebuilt replacement from your local NAPA or Pep Boys though.

Thanks ROMI and Barry!  I will pass this great stuff over to my friend.  He and his Challenger will be quite happy!
