Engine eats sprak plugs
« on: June 08, 2006 - 08:38:53 AM »
Hi, this isn't about a mopar, but my brothers Ford 351W. We have been troubled with it, the plugs get black with carbon, it won't run properly and just starts to backfire trough the exhaust when under load. Sometimes straight from idle. The Engine has Eddie RPM heads, Air-gap intake, a Speed Demon 750 vacuum. Don't know the internals, but it has high compression. The ignition is a Autolite distributor; PerTronix Ignitor, Accel 8140 coil (The yellow one). Taylor Spiro-Pro 8mm ignition wires.
As said we've been troubled for some time, tried diffrent plugs, changed plug wires. The car won't run with under ca 18 degrees of timing. The car runs best with distributor vacuum clock pushed all the way towards the radiator hose. I'm not sure about the timing exact number ATM, because we've tried so many different combos the last few days. Everything between 18 to 30 degrees. We have tride to tickle with the carb too, and also had it apart last night. We discovered that the accel pump was 3mm open at all times. Car ran great last night, today after driving a bit it was back to black plugs and backfires.
Any ideas what's wrong?

you need to start tuning the carb , I would star wityh chercking the power valve to make sure it is not damaged & is closed at idle , check float levels then get into jetting down if everyhting else is ok

jvike,

I'm just guessing here, but the car never ran right with this carb. on it, did it? I definitely think it needs tuning as Chryco mentioned. I would just like a little more info from you. Like did this engine ever run well? A recent rebuild? I'm just trying to confirm the carb. is the problem.  :grinyes:

Boys, I've spendt the whole evening in the garage, it turned out that is was the secondary fuel bowl level. It was full! The carb backfired fuel when I stoped the engine, and when I opened the adjuster lock screw, fuel ran out! So you guys was spot on! My brother had the carb apart a few weeks ago, he should have checked that out way earlyer. A real blow to his ego, hehe. Got the engine to run beautifuly, spark plugs had a nice brown tan to them. Now we can enjoy the weekend at an Open track road race event. We'll be the only musclecar out there, hunting turbo-fourbangers! Thanks for the help, guys. Hopefully, my Barracuda can join him at the next event in august. Btw the car runs great with that carb, The Demon/Eddie Air-gap combo have been proven on many dyno runs in the mags.
