Rebuilt Transmission question

My buddy has a 727 that was rebuilt 2 - 2 1/2 years ago that has been sitting in his garage. Is this transmission any good still or would it need another rebuild.

It should be fine. Were all openings plugged? You have to watch for dirt dobber(wasp) problems, they like to fill vent holes and such. If there is no surface rust on any thing that you can see , it should be fine. It would be a good idea to take like an oil can and squirt some transmission fluid into the front seal/pump bushing and rear seal/bushing area. :thumbsup:

As far as I know it was all plugged. It has a stock lever. Should I put a 3.8 lever in? How hard is that to do?

Do you know for sure what the ratio is? Just because it is stock does not mean it does not have a 3.8 lever already. Some transmissions (especially 60's and early 70's) had 3.8 from the factory. It is pretty easy to do. You have to remove the valve body and take the plug out from inside the bell housing and slid the pivot pin out. Is it a need? It depends on what kind of power is going to be in front of the trans.

I bought a 727-A on eBay from a trans shop that had gone out of business. This trans was sealed and had sat for about two years. I was careful to let it warm up/pressurize, idling in neutral for about 15 minutes, and then went slow with it for the first 50 or so miles. It worked great, no problems. Of course, your mileage may vary.

Since it is already out,  I would change the pumps front seal, pumps outer o-ring, pump to case gasket, and shifter shaft seal.   All available from an auto parts store.  Cheap insurance to keep you from hating yourself later, if you find a major puddle under the car.

PS,  The front pumps bolts break off very easily when tightening them down.
