need some advise

just bought a new 18' dovetail to haul the chally to Carlisle, looking at axle straps and some 5,000 pound straps from summit. I have no D rings as it is a wood floor trailer, wondering how you guys haul your cars and what straps you use.

My father in law works for Cassens Transport, they haul the new Chrysler vehicles out of the St. Louis Plant. I have the actual "chain winches" off the semi trailers on my trailer . I am not a fan of the big ratchet straps that most people use. I have seen the nylon webbings get very worn. I like a chain to tie down my prized possesions. You also want the tie down to pull as straight down on the suspension as you can with a slight angle. When you have a long stretched out tie down , the vehicle likes to bounce up and down on the trailer. I also will never tow a car on a trailer that does not have it's own brakes ever again (I had a real close call one time in the rain) :cheers:

ty transamman, I have brakes and all, kinda worried using chains as on the front not much to hook to.  at the axles is the best because the car can move on shocks and that helps.

If you do not tie down to the frame  the car will bounce alot on the trailer going down the highway. It can loosen up what tie down you do have on it. I would modify the trailer how ever I had to so I would have some very good tie down spots on it. After all this is a Challenger :drool: that you will be hauling.

Well you can weld some D-ring to the Trailer, or have a good welder do it for you, two in the front , and two in the rear or Four on the side

I use the nylon tie down straps, but only use the 10,000 lb rated ones. The 5K ones are too flimsy IMO. I tie down the back of the car using the factory tie downs. They are attached to the rear frame rails. If the car does not have tiedowns, i use an axle strap around each side of the rear axle. I tie down the front by wrapping an axle strap around the lower control arm on each side. I dont like loading the front suspension down while trailering. Thats 4 tie downs (each corner) for the car. Just my way of doing it, been trailering Mopars for years and have thousands of miles towing with no problems. Inspect your straps regularly, and replace them when you see any fraying and you'll have no problems. It's important to make sure the tie down straps dont rub anywhere when you have the car tied down, so they wont get damaged. Don't cross the straps either, I used to do that and found out that the nylon straps are designed to be strongest in a straight pull, not angled. Every 100 miles or so, get out and ratchet down on the straps to make sure they stay tight, as they will loosen up a bit as you go down the road. I always tighten them up after the first 10 miles or so, then every time i stop for fuel or food. I also check my safety chains, tow rig hookup, and all the trailer and truck tires at every stop. I also use an equalizer bar setup and sway control. I wont skimp when it comes to towing equipment, i figure if i have over $100K invested in the car, trailer and truck, i better have not cheaped out on my towing equip.
