PCV and/or breather in cast MP valve covers?
« on: June 19, 2006 - 06:58:22 PM »
I am just about set to put on my cast valve covers. I need to cut the holes for the grommets. Any tips there other than cut it a little small so the grommet fits nice and tight? Also, I see some folks going with dual breather caps. Is a breather cap and PCV better? How about two PCV's? Any advice there?

Just did a set of those cast aluminum valve covers for my dad's car. Pretty straight forward, just get a nice hole-saw (make sure its a little small) and drill the hole. Now get some lubricant or vasoline and work the grommet in (if you have any trouble get a die grinder and open the hole up a little). All that is left is for you to pop the pcv valve in and you are ready to go. BTW, make sure to put in the baffles......

there are proper grommets available from mopar to fit those covers , use them
1 PCV valve max , you can just use 2 breathers as well , but I generally use a PCV for street use

Mike,

On those valve covers, you don't have to make any cuts. The holes for the breather and PCV valve just punch out.

Cool - yes, I bought the grommet set and one push in breather from Summit last week; they are 1/2" inside diameter and look like they were made for a VERY thick aluminum.

Now THAT I did not notice. It looks like smooth alumiminum across the top. I will have to examine that more closely  :naughty:

You DEFINITELY need a PCV valve for street. W/O the pressure inside the engine builds up and you will have oil seepage.  :smokin:

turn valve cover over and you will see easy punch out....

buy the baffle set from Mopar if you have not already got them.

I bought a chrome breather that had a nipple to run a hose from breather to the stock air cleaner on my 383....got it at Pep Boys I think.

also went and bought a generic PCV valve that was metal, with the right bend from them as I did not like the all plastic one the parts catalog reccomended........I assume sucking air is sucking air on these....

Cool - I knocked the plugs easy enough. Carefully drum sanded the remaining top ridge and put my grommets in. My PVC is good to go but the breather cap that the sales guy at Summit sold me is incorrect. Its a 1" diamter push in and my grommets are .75".  WTF over?  The part number is P4529881. Its a MP parts a well. She shore is purdy!

Maybe theres a smaller one that fits my application. I think he said the push in was for small block and the twist on was big block?
