Ok now you guys have got me looking at pictures of original 71's. The pictures I have are all at such an angle that I can't tell with any certainty if they were painted or not. I will have to do some more searching.

I found a picture that has a good view of the grille and its mounting. It does show the silver rivets. Unfortunately it is fuzzy when I scanned it. This doesn't mean that the rivets were not painted black. It could be one of those things that early production cars like mine did not get the black treatment. It would be interesting to survey the members to see what they have.

OK, all I know is that my grill was an unmolested standard (non-RT) grill. The rivets were aluminum and hollow and black.  I still have some of them, maybe I'll pic-n-post.  As for the paint after assembly theory, that was just that.. a theory, based on the missing silver paint on the underside of the insert on both sides where there is  step in the plastic.  Incidentally, there is a black stripe that goes on the inside of the inserts, but only half way around. Again I'm basing all of this on a NON-RT grill that had never been touched.  Maybe the paint scheme was different for an RT grill.

I see two things in the purple RT above that are different from my orginal grill.  The black stripe on the inside of the insert is not there. (If this grill had been painted then I would understand because this stripe will be difficult to duplicate), and second, the tips of the rivet tabs on my inserts were painted black.

That looks awesome. Are you going to put it on your car? It looks too good for that.

Very nice Romi, did you end up screwing the bulges back in?

Yeah, a friend of mine found the perfect size round head cap screw. Unless you get REAL close you can't tell it apart from the original rivet.

Hey ROMI, I think that maybe you painted the inside of your grille wrong.  It looks like you have the tabs on the buldges painted silver and what the buldges fasten to in the grill painted silver too.  At least that's how it looks on the drivers side.  The tabs and part where it fastens should be black.

No, that's the reflection of the lights that were behind me. They're black.  The inserts are silver but the tabs are black. The whole background grid work that the inserts attach to are also black.  You're right, if you look at the left side you can tell that they're black.
