SB magnum heads
« on: June 28, 2006 - 10:49:34 PM »
Ok just wandering if anyone else has found out anything similar to what I have found.  In my quest to find a  SB head that makes good power for my rebuild (i wanted to use magnum heads) at the JY where I bought the heads the man said "you can buy em and takem but they will be cracked.  I thought yeah right!  I took them to my engine man. (heres the kicker) He had 8 sets of magnum heads in the shop floor.  He is replacing the heads from all the magnum sb trucks from the Texas dept of trans. local fleet.  Ever set has a crack between the intake and exahust valves?  I saw the cracks.  You can imagine the shock on my face.......showing up with manum heads :sly:  We then pulled the valves from my set of heads......yep cracked! :hyper:  Needless to say I am staying with my pre magnum heads!!  JY gave $$ back said another guy went through 10 sets to find 1 good head!   ????

it is a combination of things poorer fuel , leaner mixtures, making more heat & a thin casting , it is typical even for the earlier 308/302 castings but it is easily fixed with a plug & new seat , I still prefer the Shaft rocker to the far weaker GM style Ball stud system which is why I like the 308 casting better , or you can spend more $$ & buy Alum heads but you will need to use a small chamber head or change pistons to bring up th ecomprsssion to compesate for the heat loss
