Car show categories

My company is planning to sponsor a car show and we would like some input on what categories you would recommend for a breakdown of trophies.  I know alot of you go to shows so if you have a breakdown on what others are using, please post it hear.  I have also seen a judging spec sheet somewhere so if anyone has one of those  . . .that would be helpful also!  (REDLINE I think you had one I saw once)

The show is planned for September 10 in Howell Michigan so if anyone wants to drive up, please do!

Mopar only show?

No this is open to everyone as this is the Motor capital of the world so everyone is welcome!  Looking to get some input on categories and judging info.  Everyone please attend!

I had planned a show here in Jersey around the same time and considered calling it the Patriots Day (Sept 11) car show. Very Red White and Blue! You can do a lot with the theme

--best of show (overall best car period)

--best paint (1st, 2nd 3rd)

--best engine (1st, 2nd 3rd)

--long distance (1st) Makes guy who went out of his way happy and will return with friends

--peoples choice (1st)

--best original/unrestored (1st, 2nd 3rd)

--best hot rod (1st, 2nd 3rd)

--best under construction (for teh same reason as distance award)

--best GM, Mope Ford, Other (1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th in each, then all #1s go against each other and best car of the 4 is best of show-others go to 1-2-3 and 4th in wining group becomes 3rd). Best to have you other car buddies who know other brands judge

With these kind of categories you can get it done without being an expert in all brands, nothing is worse then a Moapr guy trying to determine if the bumper on a Talledega did in fact come from a Ferd station wagon (this is true). Living in Motor City will be tough though


You can go nuts with categories depending on turnout and # of trophies you want to give out:
Street Machines
Vettes
Antiques
Low-Riders
Late Model Muscle
Dare I say it, Foreign

BY ALL MEANS................IF YOU "INVITE" NEWER CARS HAVE A CATAGORY JUST FOR THEM ! sorry for the caps, but the one biggest complaint I hear is from owners who have to compete with new cars. Beleive it or not, a couple years ago a guy drives into a local show with a 2002 Ford Lightening pu with dealer plates, entered the show and of course scored high enough for a trophy. He d@mn near had to have it repainted before he left, there were some mad "street rodders" now let me tell ya.  A lot of shows around here are going to a "nothing newer than 1975", or they load everything newer than 1980 into one group..............?

  I went to a show last year, and there were 3 older guys with the hoods popped on their brand new Caddies.  Yeah, nice cars guys, but they are NEW!!!!  So what did you do to restrore them? 

  Maybe a catagory for a 70 Challenger  that looks somewhat burgundy, and is not numbers matching???

I have actually helped assemble a category of cars at the Eyes on Design show in Grosse Point. I have also been a judge.
We never used one of those sheets, we would just review the cars and discuss which design we liked best.
As far as car categories go-

--best of show (overall best car period)

--best paint (1st, 2nd 3rd)

--best engine (1st, 2nd 3rd)

--long distance (1st) Makes guy who went out of his way happy and will return with friends

--peoples choice (1st)

Some of the small local shows put on by a mixed make club I was in did all peoples chioce awards,no judging and no arguing about points.My only judging complaint was at a local Mopar show where my low buck modified 99% home biult `72 Barracuda driver was judged against a big $$$    trailer queen `71 Hemi CLONE (paint daub,dealer prep tags ....on a clone?)which of course won the class.He didn`t fit in the stock restored class b/c it was a clone but I don`t think he really should have been in a modified class either.

Our club did a thing once where the Police Chief, Mayor and other 'dignitaries' (or a representative if they couldn't make the show) picked their favorites. The car owners were given a Police Chief's Award, Mayor's Award, etc. trophy. The car show entrants really liked the concept, and it helps create goodwill between the club and the local muckety mucks.

Having a non-car person is good but can also backfire when he picks a 71 Vega with 2 different fender colors up against a strong #2 car of any make. Then you piss off car owners. I 've been there, when teh Mayor things he knows and you =can't talk him out of it. It can work great relations with locals though. Helping them make choices will often push them in the right direction.
