VIN number matching the cowl number
« on: July 11, 2006 - 04:41:39 PM »
I have 70 challenger with the VIN windshield tag matching the engine block exactly, but the number stamped on the cowl and the radiator support are the same except for the very last digit, which on the windshield and the engine block are an 8, but the cowl and the radiator support are a 6.  Has anyone seen or heard about this before?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Welcome aboard here.  :wave:

  If all numbers match except for the last digit on the rad support and cowl, I would think some guy had a bad day on the production line and put a 6 where an 8 should have been. The rad number and cowl were probably stamped at the same time I would guess.  Does the sticker on the door verify the 8 is correct? If so, I believe you are all numbers matching.

I have heard of it before, you can find an example with photos at this link on page 2;

and another one here;

I am always looking for more examples of these type off errors for the error pages of the site, so if you can get me some clear photos I would be glad to add it.

T/Ake care,

I have a Cuda with the first 2 numbers on the body mis stamped.  It happen more than people know.
The funniest thing about this particular signature is that by the time you realize it doesn't say anything it's to late to stop reading it.

That's why we're here.  :thumbsup: We all have to start somewhere. I won't dare to tell you how clueless I was when I bought my Challenger.  :misbehaving:

I have had a couple like that.  Had a 71 Cuda that the 3rd and 4th digits on cowl were inverted, same car had a tranny that started with 2 instead of the 3 it was suppose to.

How about gaps in the vin stampings, I once purchased an all #'s matching '70 'U' code 4spd 4:10 DANA R/T vert but got spooked when I noticed the third from last digit was missing from the block stamping and the trans as well, so I sold it. Then I bought a '71 340 n96 340 R/T and to my horror the same thing only it was the second from last digit on the block and trans were missing.  It was then I realized that MOPAR's imfamously poor quality control included vin stampings as well...so I sold that one of 30-something vert for nothing!
