Is there a chance the tach was for a 6 cylinder?
Nope the tach is part of a 71-74 rallye cluster, so most likely it came off a 340 car.....

When you turn the tire one exact rotation the driveshaft turns 3 1/4 turns?
Check you u joints for any play at all. Make sure the its not in neutral and the p-brake is on. Any play replace the U-joints.
