Will I have problem selling 70 R/T Challenger?
« on: July 02, 2006 - 08:27:42 PM »
At sometime in the past, at least twenty years ago, someone replaced the dash, but didn't switch the VIN tag. Other parts of the interior had been replaced also. The seats were out of 72-74 Challenger, hence no build sheet. The fender tag matches the title. The door tag also matched the title. But when the car was painted the guy destroyed the tag  :swear:. The cowl, radiator support numbers also match. I have never thought much about it until a recent thread on a 70 Challenger For Sale had issues with the VIN. I have no doubt all that happened was someone replaced a bad dash and didn't have the brains to keep the original VIN tag. The car is a 70 383 R/T Challenger, not exactly a rare or high dollar car. The reason for my concern is that I plan on selling it soon. Do you think I am going to have problems? What can I do to ensure potential buyers that the car is as represented?

Your best resources will be proper documentation. build sheet, title, etc. You can have a dash VIN tag made if you have supporting documents.

Some buyers may not care ,others will not even consider buying a car with a swapped vin even though it was probably just a dumb mistake.I would take the effort to try and get a correct vin tag made for the car which will eliminate the whole issue.

The car looks great and sure the Vin will make some problems but the people that know will still buy it, but you get rid of tirekickers hopefully

Went to the Michigan Secretary of State, explained the situation, and was told I need to apply for a duplicate VIN tag. Its a tag with the original VIN number on it. I filled out the form, paid my $10. It will be a sticker that I believe is to be placed on the door. Its not the same as having the original dash tag, but should be additional assurance to potential buyers that everything is legit with the car. I have decided against getting one of the reproduction dash tags because I question whether its legal to install one. And even if it is legal, if after it were installed, it didn't look 100% factory installed, it would create additional problems trying to sell.

When I bought my Barracuda recently I had 8 different people look at it, got it inspected and titled, and was on my second shakedown run before I noticed that it didn't have a VIN on the dash. Whoops! So much for attention to detail...  :banghead:

Any way, I was trying to figure out how it got through the title process and I remembered the inspector looking in the door. Riveted to the door jamb is a replacement tag that looks like this:

It has the real VIN and not a "State Issued" number. That's probably something like what you'll end up getting.

I also live in Michigan, and I have a state issued tag from Washington which is riveted on the door jamb as well. I will apply for a new dash vin tag from the company stated as above,  as my vin tag was lost many years ago. Ususally they just need to ensure the title matches the dash, matches the door, core support ands trunk stamping. It could eb a problem if there is an error on one of your tags.... Super rare, but known to happen.

The way fakes are getting now, I would be much more inclined to buy a car with the state issued plate in the wrong spot and no real vin tag, then a shiney new vin tag from another source. Many guys are crazy about not ever touching the tag. I see no issue as long as it's replaced properly. Not like could ever afford a real Hemi car anyways..but a warning for later...
