Front Cover+WaterPump bolts need sealed?
« on: August 20, 2006 - 09:51:22 AM »
I put the waterpump on my 318 last night. Its a fresh rebuild with the front cover already bolted on it except the one bolt behind the waterpump.  Well i put the waterpump on and had to take it off to grind the bolt down some as it hits the pump. Ok the Wpumps back on end of problems,, maybe not.
Does the bolt behind the waterpump need to be sealed? teflon tape or pipe dope? I really dont want to take the pump back off but if that is going to be a source of a leak now is the time to do it.

there are 6 bolts in the timing cover & water pump that have to be sealed up , I use teflon tape , there are the 4 long bolts in the top corners of the pump & two more through the timing cover down low that also are open into the water jacket , if you just replaced the water pump you would not have removed the lower ones , just remove 1 bolt a ta time & tape it , the 2 lower water pump bolts go into the timing chain & can leak oil also

thanks for the reply, Heres a picture (if it works) of the bolt in question.  Does this run into a coolant jacket or oil passage of some sort

I think i have the picture thing figured out.. I don't think that yahoophoto allows you to hotlink.

im guessing small block correct?  I never sealed them and never had a problem, some dope or tape might keep them from rusting in tho (I dont really like tape for auto use but to each his own). be careful that you have the correct bolts in the dr side bottom. they come quite close to the cyl wall, and ive seen the cyl walls get cracked from too long of a bolt.
