engine paint????????????
« on: July 13, 2006 - 06:59:00 PM »
I know that this subject has been kicked around alot.  Has it been decided which brand is best to use to paint one's engine block.  Some people use POR, others use the MOPAR paint and I have read that some one used paint that was used on a tractor.  So, which is the best?   :clueless:  Does it come in Hemi Street Orange?  ???  I plan to paint the block in the next 30 days.

I,ve been using Duplicator engine enamel w/porcelain for lots of applications. I have found it to be very durable after a heat cure. Recently painted the rear brake backing plates silver and had a little brake fluid get on it within hours of application and it only discolored a little. They have several Chrysler colors including an orange.  :2cents:

Is the POR just brush on? If so does it smooth out so you can't see the brush marks?

Yes, and yes.

I put one coat on, then another the next day. This stuff takes 4 days to cure, so it is slooow drying. The brush marks smooth out, and it looks sprayed on now. I went in this direction since I didn't want to pull the engine, and didn't want to risk any over-spray going anywhere.

That's where I'm at, It's my daily driver so I don't have time to pull the engine, but it needs painting bad. Did you still drive it right after you painted it, I only get two days off a week so I can't let the car sit for four days, heck, I'd have a hard time letting it sit for one day LOL. I'd think the engine heat would speed up the curing?
I wonder if I can paint it then let the car warmup?

I'm not sure, but the can did say let it set for 4 days before running the engine. Maybe you can ask them? Here is the link. It's a 3 step process. You brush any flaking paint away, then apply a degreaser. Then a kind of prep-stuff that makes everything look ugly, then paint.

EDIT- Here's a pic.

Thanks everyone for you input.  MEKrunner the pic looks real good.  I just want to be sure, your engine is red.

Yep,

I wanted red. I had my choice of Chebby red, or Ford T-Bird red. I went Ford. Most of my engine compartment is non-stock looking, so I kept with the trend.  My engine compartment changes all the time. I got talked into a different intake by Chryco. So here is how it stands at the moment.

Holley street Dominator is a great choice for a big block. It worked very well on a 383 I had.
