500 Wedge MP Crate Motor - PN 4876692
« on: July 14, 2006 - 12:26:54 PM »
I recently bought a new car (68 Charger R/T) with a 500 Wedge MP Crate Motor. It's rated at 575 HP. However, I have to go through the motor again because the guy who had it before me didn't let the rings seat correctly.  Anyway,  I can't find jack for specs on this thing and I want to know the Cam specs.  All I know is .292 Adv. Duration and .543 lift.  That's it! The cam is marked on the end with # 614780. I was told that Engle might have something that matched up but no luck.  I want this motor to be streetable, run on pump gas but break your neck in the process.  Can anyone help me locate the specs on this cam.  Or suggest a new cam setup for it?  I also need a torque converter suggestion. the one I have is 2500 stall and I am not sure if that will work or not? The specs of the motor I am re-building are as follows:

· 500 cubic inches and 575 horsepower with 625 ft.-lbs. of torque
· HD cast iron, thick wall, thick deck, cross-bolted block
· Hi-flow cast aluminum Stage VI heads
· Large 2.14" intake and 1.81" exhaust stainless steel valves
· HD hi-lift single valve springs with dampers and umbrella valve seals
· 292° duration .543" lift hydraulic cam (????????)
· 4.15" stroke, forged crankshaft
· 4.380" bore, 10.25:1, flat-top, cast aluminum pistons(switching to FORGED PISTONS)
· Double-roller chain and sprockets
· Cast aluminum valve covers and chrome front cover
· Single plane M1 aluminum 4bbl intake manifold (taller than stock, check hood clearance)

The cam you have has a power band that begins at 2500 RPM. I have a Lunati with similar specs. I guess the question here is what rear gears this car will have. That will help in telling if your torque converter is big enough or not. If you have 3:23's like I do, then you should be good. If you have 4:10's... NO way.

The 575hp crate used the good old 509 hydraulic purpleshaft with 1.6:1 adjustable rockers. When you pull a valvecover there should be an adjustable valvetrain inside there....unless the previous owner removed it.

I'm not familiar with that version, but the math works for 1.6 and .509 cam. My experience with crate engines is, MP shouldnt be involved with them. I wouldnt blame the previous owner totally. Cummins isnt the best at weeding out problems before they get shipped. If it were me, I'd have every dimension checked, assume nothing. Common issues are problems with the rod sizing, wrong bearings, I've heard of pistons not having any rings at all on one piston. It would surprise me if the ring gaps are even close and the bores arent finished to proper finish and size. On the heads, the Stage VIs had some serious casting issues, and the valve job is one of the worst. Seats out of round, valves sunk, guides too tight. Have everything checked. The crate engine program is still in the 50-60% good, with Hemis and big blocks being the worst. I wouldnt even try to run a new hemi without taking it all apart and starting from a clean block. They are the cheapest way to get all new parts tho. As far as a cam choice, a ".509" in that engine is a mild cam. I dont think it would make the power advertised tho. Most dont. A 500" engine with the long stroke will eat up a cam's duration, and a carb's cfm rating. As far as cams go, I'd lean this way...Crane makes some very strong hydraulics. They are split pattern, and are easy on springs. The first p/n 684561 made 470tq to the tires at 3700 rpm in a 10.5:1 440, idles clean at 800rpm, and pulls to over 6500. The second is it's bigger brother, p/n 684571. I have a 440 going together with the bigger one right now. You may need new valve springs with both of these. They require doubles, and the heads may need to have the guides cut for the small positive seals. Thesse cams in a 500" engine will be very strong, and still idle well. I would expect the hp to be higher too if the heads flow what they are supposed to when they are fixed.
