Engine does'nt sound right.
« on: July 06, 2006 - 11:52:17 AM »
It sounds almost like it's leaking exhaust. I've checked the exhaust manifoild gasket, it's ok.
Now i'm wondering if it's maybe not firing on all cylinders. Before i begin the joyous task of taking out the plugs, or maybe even run off to the local friendly plug wire seller, i'd be happy to get suggestions of what it could be.

Please click on the picture below.

Also, it seems to be a little blacker at the right exhaust port here:

Get a piece of heater hose or garden hose about 3' long and put one end up to your ear. Use the other end to poke around the engine's exhaust header pipes and collector junctions. If there is an exhaust leak somewhere, you'll find it right away with this method.

Do you have a coilspring choke system for the carb ?  or factory intake manifold

check that nothing is leaking past the little choke spring "bucket" in the intake manifold (assuming you dont have a block off valley pan)

I've had pinholes form in my headers, gasket may be fine...you check the headers. I'd bet its a exhaust leak...only because ive delt with them FOREVER

That's a real header leak. It might be the camera, but it looks like the 3/5 flange is bent from tightening. It's the most common leak, between those 2 ports, where the cnter of the flange buckles and cant hold the pressure on the gasket. I only use the Mr Gasket Ultraseals, and I make sure the flanges are flat every time by running a flat file accross them.

It sounds to me (And the friend I showed it to) That it's not running on all cylinders. Check that your spark plug wires are in the correct order on your distributor. Also, make sure you're getting spark at the spark plug end.

It sounds too loud to me to be an exhaust leak, but it very well could be. Those can be deceiving and mechanical sounding quite often!

I would also agree that it sounds like an exhaust leak ,but a simple way to determin if a slug isn't firing is to pull the plug wires one at a time while it's running.Using the info from that can direct you closer to the what/where answers.

It does look like you had a leak. The gasket is real thin plus the black residue looks fresh and shouldn't be there if it had sealed properly. Next time if you suspect a leak it can be confirmed before tearing it down by running your fingers near the flanges and you'll feel little hot puffs. Just try not to burn yourself.

When you get it back together again and you still feel you have a misfire problem, throw a rpm meter under the hood and start removing the wires one at a time and look for an rpm drop. Note each cylinder drop. The cylinder with the least drop will be your problem area. Hint: Before doing this pop the wires out and put them in loosely with the engine off so you're not fighting to get them off while doing the test. Also, a set of insulated spark plug wire pliers come in handy to avoid getting zapped.

Good Luck

Someone did'nt check the gasket good enough the first time.

D*mned composite Fel-Pro appeared to be ok while it was stuck on the header, but once it came off, it clearly was'nt.
But this thread was'nt meaningless though, at least i got to learn a few good tricks from you guys!
