A/C refurb for dummies
« on: July 25, 2006 - 05:38:11 PM »
I have a slant six car that came with a/c. The a/c was removed and put in the garage. Car sat outside and hasn't been driven. I'd like to put it back together and get it working. The conidtion was unknown before it was removed.

What needs to be checked out/replaced? Also looking for a labeled diagram of the system so i know what things are.

Thanks for any help.

Goody,

Here is a pic of my car in its current condition. Maybe it will help you.  First off, I would check all of the hoses for cracks. Then check the condensor in front of the radiator for signs of previous leaks. I replaced my condensor to be safe as the old one had a leak.  I also replaced the receiver dryer cansiter and expansion valve up by the firewall along with all of the O-rings in the connections. I am hoping that my compressor is still good otherwise that will get replaced also. My local Advance Auto Parts says that reman compressor units are still available for about $175. Otherwise I might consider switching to a Sanden unit.  Hope that helps a little.

if any of the components connections have been left open (unsealed) that's not good.
Either way you'll want to pull a vacuum on it over night to remove contaminents..
No offense, but the A/C is not for dummies. You're going to have to find someone that knows what they're doing after you do the basic install ...

pulling a vacum may be sufficient for an auto a/c, I really don't know, but on refrigerators we blast a contaminated system with compressed nitrogen for a couple of minutes before sealing &  putting the vacum pump on.
