Sorry to hear about that, that royally stinks! I've always said " I wouldn't run a fram on lawnmower"  I always heard the horror stories, but what sealed the deal for me was on an 94 318 dakota I used to have.  Whenever I had a fram on, my oil pressure would drop considerably after about 500 miles on it.  First time it happened I shrugged it off.  The second time, I raised an eyebrow and changed to a WIX without changing the oil, and the pressure went back up.  Never used a fram again, and never had the issue again.  I'll use a cheap stp filter before I use a fram!

this is why I use Wix filters

I have only used wix in all of my cars for many many years,its one of the reasons i always change my oil myself,wix and pure synthetic oil,even in my diesel,which costs an arm and a leg with 14 quarts.Wix is the best,most places like Napa can show you a cut away difference and the wix isnt that expensive.When you can buy 3 fram filters at wallymart for 5 bucks that should tell you something about the quality,

I've always used FRAM, but keep reading more and more people having problems, what is the PN for WIX filter?

For the RB motor's, #51515 WIX.

Got the word from the engine builder. He sent out the oil filter to a shop that tests the oil and determines what's in it. Showed lead in the oil, which means a bearing going bad. :swear: So, out with the engine ( again ). I guess what happened with the oil filter is that it totally disintegrated, and all kinds of plastic material used in the oil filter just went everywhere, probably blocking some oil passages, etc. Not pretty. I gotta hand it to the engine builder, though. The engine is coming out tomorrow morning, and will be at his shop in the afternoon. With luck ( and 'cause he keeps a lot of big-block mopar engine parts around ), I'll have it re-installed by Sunday. He's pretty much going all out to see that I'm satisfied, and I totally appreciate that. I'd recommend him for engine rebuilds, no doubt about it. Anyway, that's the latest.
You know, here I thought that Fram was always a good product, but apparently not. I'm hearing horror stories from you guys as well as other gearhead friends of mine. And yeah, Fram's going to get a nice letter from me on this matter. They probably won't do a damn thing about it ( or maybe they'll be kind enough to offer me a replacement oil filter, which I will not so politely decline! ) Thanks for all the feedback and commiseration, I'll keep you all posted.

i know a local racer who lost a brand new $5000 engine during break in due to the fram falling apart. ive used em without a problem off and on for years, but think ill stick with the stp or ac delco (i know thats really wrong). i dont even mind having a penzoil filter from the quicky lube, just so they dont put penzoil in the engine. that will be valvoline , kendall , or mobil.
     heck ill even use walmart brand in my driver as long as its out of a bottle. look at the labels on the walmart oil and the labels on mobil. I used to work maintanance in the factory that makes the labels, they bouth go through the same cutter, and get shiped to the same plant. cant say %100 that its the exact same oil, but im guessing its good stuff.

Ouch, sorry to hear about that!!! :swear:  I remember reading the horror stories of Fram filters throughout the Internet a couple years ago.  I've usually always put them on my daily driver Toyota, but after the horrors I switched to Penzoil or Napa Gold's when I buy through them.  That's great your engine builder is fixing it for you, but I'd definitely speak my mind in a letter to Fram. :swear: :stomp: :pullinghair:

droptop, who did that engine?? he may have just earned a new customer when it comes time for me to have one done next. I have a guy ive used before in the area who is really good , but mostly a chevy circle track boy. and i know of a guy in foundy who does some rippin mopar motors, but nobody closer. not that foundy is far. and im right around the corner from one of his loyal customers shop. just thought it would be nice to know who trys that hard to make customers happy. when i was racing i knew of guys having an engine done and it blew before it even hit the track. the builder blamed the racer saying he installed it wrong and blew it up   :screwy:  i know it aint hard to blow a sb chevy, but by bolting it in wrong?? not just one case either, but the same builder.

I don't know if this helps, but with your engine shop's intervention, you may have a shot at having Fram/Honewell pay for the repairs as long as the motor was not modified, but rebuilt as stock. They do have a warranty, but I am sure they could give you a hard time about it. It is worth checking out. Good Luck

I won't be buying Fram anymore!  I've heard rumor about those filters but no one could tell me why they are no good.  Now I know!

ChrisII - the engine builder is John Bailey, he's out by Sun Prairie area, so he's real close to you. He's a stand-up kind of guy, knows what he's doing, and won't give you any BS. PM me if you want his address and phone number.
Too bad that now I'm hearing all kinds of bad stuff about Fram - oh, well, if my experience can help out anyone here, at least some good will have come of it. I appreciate all the suggestions and comments from everyone here.
I'll be finding out next day or so exactly what happened to the engine. Will keep you all posted.

yeah, i never realised that frams have caused so many problems. gotts look im pretty sure i have a fram on my duster right now. i know for a fact that ive run em on my circle track cars and must have gotten lucky, but i never set them up for high oil pressure either. I may have a set of small block heads done in the next year or so , but no real planns to have a engine done as i have a fresh internaly balanced 360 under cover in my garadge. it neads a couple new pistons but only has 2 nights on it at the track so rebuild and machene work wont be neaded there.
