318 to 440 switch (drive line components ) question
« on: August 08, 2006 - 01:24:06 PM »
Have 1973 barracuda was 318 ,will be installing 440 & trans from '72 fury police car. Rear in barracuda is 8 3/4 with a '489' carrier w/2.76 gears and 2 1/8" yoke. Trans from fury has 2 5/8" yoke. Rear in fury is 8 3/4 w/  '489' carrier w/ 3.23 gears and 2 5/8" yoke. I think I should use the driveshaft from the fury which is 2 5/8" yoke and have it cut down. But should I take the carrier from the fury to use in the cuda because it has the 2 5/8" yoke and 3.23 gears? :clueless:

I would , the 323 gears are a nicer ratio unless you like cruising at over 100 mph

This might sound dumb but being a  :newbie: and all that Do I need to pull the wheels , drums , unbolt the axles and pull the axles out to pull the carrier?  And I can just push the axles back in & rebolt  with no carrier to get the fury towable? Or do I need to put the 2.76 carrier in, I would rather keep the original carrier & gears also.

yes you can slide the axles back in to tow the car away & keep both carriers
