Gear ratio queestion
« on: August 01, 2006 - 01:55:59 PM »
After I finish my 71 cuda clone project, I will be starting on my 70 'cuda clone project and have a question about gear ratios. The 70 is going to be either a 440 six-pack 18 spline 4 speed dana rearend or a 426 hemi 18 spline 4 speed and dana rearend. The question is should I install 3.54 gears in the dana or 4.11?

Lots of ways to go with this one.  How will the car be used?  Highway, around town to shows/cruises, dragstrip occasionally.   :dunno:  How tall are your rear tires gonna be?  Fuel mileage a concern?  I have run many street Hemi's over the years with everything from a 3:23 to a 5:57 (drag car).  For the street, I like the bottom end snappiness of the 4:10.  Might be a little much if you are gonna spend some time on the interstate.  Nothing like a quick revving Hemi running up through a set of 4:10's.  They really let that motor do it's thing.  I am running 4:10's in the Beast and I turn around 2200-2300 rpm at 60 mph.  But my rear tires are 31" tall.  Not enough difference between the 3:91 and the 4:10 to matter much on the street.  For my money, if you have another daily driver, then let that motor breath and give it the 4:10's.  Just my  :2cents:  I am sure you will get many opinions on this one........   :cooldancing:   Oldschool

I am kind of with oldschool on this one too. I used to run a set of 5:50 on the street in my old hemi roadrunner -but now I run 4:30 with 26 inch tires ...just depends on your useage

in most applications the 3.54 is the better choice , the 4.10 gets old on the highway pretty fast
