Challenger Package tray & Rear Defrost.
« on: August 13, 2006 - 10:12:05 AM »
It looks like the rear defrost uses the package tray that has the speaker slots in it so that the motor can get air through it speaker vent.... right?  Since mine was removed and rear speakers put in, can someone tell how does the motor attach to the vehicle?  Does anyone have a stock rear defrost motor that they can take a picture of?  There has to be some kind of bolt that come down from the package tray area???????

Also, does that mean that someone could not have ordered rear defrost and rear speakers on the same car when new?

Thanks in advanced!   :2thumbs:

These pics are from my 72 Satellite.  I am sure the set up is the same as Challenger.  My one Challenger has a different defroster base.  It allows the use of a speaker and the defroster.  The defroster is moved over on the base.  I have the car apart and do not know where the defroster is at this time.  These pics should answer your question.  This car has 49000 miles on it and has never been touched, so this is the way Mopar put it together.

Nothing like pumping your rear defrost right over your speaker cone.  Seems like a crazy way to do it.

The previous owner put rear speakers in it.... I'm taking them out and going back to stock (just a rear defrost), but I screwed up and ordered a rear package tray without the speaker slots cut in it.  Now I gotta buy a new one with speakers slots!  Oh well.

Cody,

If you mount your speaker covers on top like I did, then you can hack away at the one you have(it's a tough cookie  :eek4: ) . Basically, I have speaker cover, package tray, speaker, then the steel tray underneath it all. Let me throw this disclaimer out there, this is how I THINK I did it, it's been a while, but I can confirm it tomorrow. I definitely have the speaker covers over the package tray though.

My cuda has the rear defrost. It mounts under the right side speaker hole and the speaker is mounted behind the motor on mine. I'm not shure how it mounts to the underside of the package shelf (bolts and nuts or sheet metal screws) as I took it off 20 years ago and am just getting everything back toghether now.   Doug

Thanks for all the pictures.  Helps me understand it better.   :2thumbs:

I'm going to be putting the car back to stock and since the vehicle did not come (so I think) rear speakers, I will be leaving them out.  The car came with a make shift rear speaker / defrost set up that was really bad.

So cars with rear defrost and NO REAR speakers still used the package tray that has speaker vents.... right?

My Satellite is set up with the speaker cut outs and it has never been touched. It is a front speaker AM car. Challenger should be the same.
