440 six-pack backfiring .
« on: August 14, 2006 - 11:22:32 AM »
Had a problem driving home from a car show yesturday. The night before I had a dead battery on my 440 six-pack Cuda clone, I put the charger on it all night. The next morning the car started right up. Drove about 45 min. to the show in 100 degree heat, and parked. My electric fan ran about 10 min cooling down the car. When I was leaving the car had a dead battery, so I needed a jump, I thinking I need a new battery. About halfway home on the Highway cruising at 70mph the car starts backfiring and sputtering. I did manage to make it home threw the city at 30mph.
My question is, would a dead battery or bad alternater make the car start backfiring? Plugwires are fine.
Thanks for the help.

Absolutly
if the battery is low power to the ign will be too & this will always effect the ign system & cause misfiring
you may want to look into getting an Optima red or yellow battery they are awesome batterys as long as you keep trickle charging them & they can last 10 years or more

Thanks for your help.

I know Chryco helped you already, but be thankful it was a cheap fix.  :grinyes: If it was your alternator or voltage regulator, you never would have made it home.

The funny thing is that this has never happened to me in a old car with a low battery. I know on a modern car with it's computor and electronics, a low battery is very noticable. I had a bad altenator and battery in my 71 Olds 442 once, but the car didn't backfire. I thought a plug wire got fried on the header was my first thought.
