I had a mopar revelation last night, lol,I'll just have one of the 833od bearings(I have 2)turned down to the stock bell size and stick the OD tranny in,thats the easiest and least amount of labor way.Is there any reason i wouldnt be able to turn down the front bearing to make it fit?Is there some bell holes too small to turn down the 833OD?thanks

it can be turned down to 4.8" , to cut it to 4.32 it would cut into the bolts holding the retainer on , so you need to open up the hole in the bel instead

normally it would be 4.32 , some were 4.8" , you will have to measure yours to find it

Moparnut,

It's summer time and cruising time.  Pull the driveshaft, linkage and shifter, unbolt the tranny, then drop it.
Open the side cover and fix the problem, then reinstall it. If you want to put in the OD, use the new bell.  It can all be done in a couple of hours.

During winter time, put all of your new stuff in at once.     If you cut your old bell, you can't use it with a stock tranny anymore unless you change stuff around.

If you're going to restore the car, might as well just get the original tranny rebuilt. You're going to have to do it sometime, so you might as well do it now and get it out of the way (If you have the cash, or course). Just one less thing to worry about later on, and one step closer to complete.

thanks for the info and recommendations.Since I am going to bag the numbers stuff and put in a built 340 i have sitting on an engine stand and an 833od,I dont really care if the original tranny is rebuilt at this time,it will just be stored anyway. So,when i get a chance(after i finish the blasting and primering my GC is out to paint, which will probably be about 1-2 months from now),I will pull the trans and bell and install the OD/bell so i can drive the car.I do remember now the previous owners were selling the car because one of the synchros was bad in the tranny, although it did shift it wont now.
