firing order, confused.

Was checking the firing order of my 74' 360 and someone has wired the plugs so the firing order is  1,8,5,7,4,3,6,2.  I thought the correct order was 1,8,4,3,6,5,7,2.   The weird thing is that the engine seems to run fairly decent. I guess as long as things are well balanced then it should work, does this sound weird or what? Should I leave it or change it, maybe I'll try the correct way and see what happens.

You have it right. I just can't believe it runs good the way it is.  Maybe you saw it wrong? In any event, I would try putting it the right way. It should run like a top then.

Well, I went out to the garage again to recheck things and this is how it was originally configured,

1,2,6,3,4,5,7,8.

So I changed it to 1,8,4,3,6,5,7,2. As you can see 2,8 and 6,4 were swapped. Tried starting it and had backfire through the carb. Changed it back to the original pattern of 1,2 etc. What is up?

Don't forget rotation.  The big blocks are counter clockwise and the small blocks are clockwise (hope I didn't get that backwards).  Don't ask me how I learned this but lets just say there was alot of backfiring.

Yep, CW looking down at the top of the distributor. Guess the next step is to check cyl.8 at TDC of the compression stroke and see where the rotor is pointing.

I think I have egg on my face. Could someone confirm the cylinder layout for a 318. Is it:

the crank damper is different between 360/318
it will also have the CI cast on the side of the block & stamped in front just below the left cylinder haed

No egg. I've done over a hundred of engines. And many more tune ups. I still get the order wrong on occasion...
